Busy Bags

Unless my kidlets are abnormal, I'm going to guess that you have noticed your own kidlets tend to get bored quite easily. So what do you do when they're whiney and bored and they've already exhausted more TV hours than any child should even dream of watching?

What do you do when you've got adult responsibilities calling your name, and your preschooler has made it his day's goal to drown it out with his own screams and demands?

What do you do in your homeschool day when your reading class is constantly interrupted by your two year old climbing the kitchen counter, throwing bananas, and dumping flour? (Yes, that's happened to me.)

Busy bags to the rescue!

Q: What is a busy bag?
A: A busy bag is a plastic zippered bag containing all the items needed for an engaging, sometimes educational, always creative activity. There is no running around the house try to find pieces or items to do the activity. It's al right there, ready to go.

Q: What age group are the busy bags geared toward?
A: It depends on the busy bag set. Kidlet Occupation offers (or will soon) three basic age catagories: toddler, preschool, and early elementary. They cover the following approximate ages.

Toddler: 1-2 yr. olds (12-35 mos.)
Preschooler: Adv. 2 yr. olds - young 5 yr. olds
Early Elementary: Kdg. - 2nd gr.

Q: What type of activities are in the busy bags?
A: Once again, it depends on the busy bag set. Kidlet Occupation offers (or will soon) various sets, ranging from basic, age appropriate activities to educational activities intended to assist you in teaching your child. Below, you will find a general overview of the types of activities for the three basic age groups.

Toddler: Fine motor activities: fill and dump, in and out, on and off, open and close, color and size recognition
Preschool: Fine motor activities, letters and sounds, numbers and counting, shapes and colors, creativity builders
Early Elementary: Fine motor activities, reading and language arts, math, science, creativity builders

Q: What is a busy bag swap?
A: A busy bag swap is a group of moms who each assemble and swap a set number of busy bags. Each mom assemble the set number of bags of the exact same activity. The moms then exchange the busy bags, so that each mom has one bag of every activity.

Here at Kidlet Occupation, the swap is done through the mail. Thrity moms each assemble 30 bags of the exact same activity, and then ship it to the swap coordinator. The swap coordinator sorts through the activities, boxing up one of each for all 30 moms, and then ships out to each mom in the swap.
